Advertorial: ANDAR Brings Motion to the Defence and Aerospace Industry

by Can Kılınç

ANDAR Electromechanical Systems (ANDAR) has been a provider of electromechanical actuation system solutions for the Turkish defence and aerospace industry since 2012. These products, developed to increase the safety of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and to allow them to fly in civilian air space, have already proven themselves through their outstanding performance on the field. Continually increasing its expertise and experience in its area of operation, ANDAR also develops new products within the context of various applications for electromechanical actuation systems that are required by Turkey’s industry. As the producer of a wide range of solutions, with its actuation systems developed for civil aviation, land systems, and underwater platforms, ANDAR constantly conducts R&D studies to further increase its knowledge in its area of expertise.

Competitive and Indigenous Products in the International Arena

When developing the actuation systems required by the platforms which the Turkish industry produces, ANDAR designs them to be competitive in the international markets.

The biggest advantage of ANDAR is that it understands the procuring authority very well, offering products to meet its requirements accordingly. Behind the success of ANDAR is the more than 10 years of platform design experience that its founding team has gained by working together.

Another important factor is that all subunits of the developed systems are designed internally by the company to the maximum extent possible. Since the day it was founded, ANDAR has been designing mechanical and embedded software and hardware, while also conducting product development activities. Also gaining the capability to develop sensitive transfer elements and sensitive electric motors over time, the company enhanced both its design capabilities and ratio of domestic participation, while also reducing its external dependence.

The most important feature that distinguishes ANDAR from its competitors is its capability to develop integrated systems. The company’s solutions are lighter and smaller compared to other products in the market, and these systems’ level of safety can be increased whenever needed. Thanks to these features, ANDAR can offer solutions that are safe for UAVs; that are light and certification-compliant for aerial systems; and which represent the best alternative to hydraulic actuators in land systems, especially in the context of modernisation projects.

Domestic Participation Rate and Quality on the Rise

ANDAR’s investments focus on continually increasing the indigenousness of system subunits. This issue has become more important today, at a time when external dependence is turning into a bigger problem. Sensitive electric motors, which are one of the most critical components, have been indigenised through domestic R&D studies. These studies are continuing with TÜBİTAK’s support and ANDAR’s own resources, under the consultancy of METU faculty members. In addition to electromechanical actuators, ANDAR can also offer as a solution subcomponents (e.g. electric motor/driver, motor-driver-threaded rod, etc.) in various combinations.

Having grasped the importance of quality and compliance with military standards in the procurement of defence and aerospace products, ANDAR has, since the very first product it developed, been designing its products in line with environmental and electromagnetic standards, namely MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461, while also carrying out the relevant verification and validation processes in line with the customers’ expectations. Since ANDAR is involved in civil aviation projects, it harmonizes its relevant designs according to the DO-160 and DO-254. The company is also working to increase its quality system to the AS 9100 level over the course of 2017.

From UAVs to Guidance Group

As of the end of 2016, flight control actuators developed by ANDAR for UAVs have completed a total of over 30,000 flying hours. These products, which continue to carry out their missions with zero loss of function, have proven, thanks to their redundant design, that they are the best solution for the UAVs of the future. ANDAR has begun to utilise the experience it gained on UAVs – through projects that first started in 2016 – to meet the needs of other platforms as well.

ANDAR’s guidance actuator product family, which will be launched at IDEF, has been developed for the purpose of guiding autonomous systems and guided munitions. This product family is currently being tested on an underwater platform, and will also be used by guided missiles fired from air and land.

There Is a Lot to Add to Land Platforms

Another ANDAR product displayed at IDEF is the antenna guidance system, whose tests have already been completed. Compared with similar products imported from abroad, the system stands out with its significantly smaller and more user-friendly design. ANDAR has thus started to develop indigenous products for land platforms as well. ANDAR noticed during this process that by integrating multiple systems within the context of modernisation and indigenisation projects, it is possible to obtain simpler solutions.

Based on its R&D studies and using its own resources, ANDAR has developed an electromechanical actuator system with integrated electric motor and driver, which can potentially become widely used in land platforms. Owing to its design, the product has become the best alternative for hydraulic actuators that are undergoing modernisation.

Significant Move in Air Platforms

Focusing on actuators the aviation experience and knowledge it gained since 2000, ANDAR produces solutions for fixed and rotary wing platforms used in both military and civil aviation applications. In this context, ANDAR is conducting various projects on electromechanical autopilots and trim actuators, which are necessary to meet civil aviation certification requirements.

The future of civil aviation industry lies in More Electric Aircraft. Building on the technologies it developed for UAVs and tested with success, ANDAR is preparing to further develop electromechanical and safe movement systems for civil aviation, for which the demand is expected to rise.

Turkey’s Future Lies in Specialised Companies

In addition to producing a wide range of solutions for unmanned air platforms and land platforms, ANDAR also concentrates on electromechanical movement systems. The company, which attaches great importance to specialising in its area of expertise, is continuously conducting R&D studies in order to increase its design capabilities and knowledge in the field of subsystems. ANDAR believes that the key for developing and exporting competitive products in the defence and aerospace industry is to have specialised companies that develop high performance subsystems and thereby support the prime contractors.

During IDEF 2017, ANDAR’s products, developed for air, land and unmanned platforms, will be exhibited both at the company’s stand and on the platforms to be showcased at the prime contractors’ stands.
