President Erdoğan: F-16 Fighters Will Be Procured as Compensation for the Payments Done for F-35 Fighters

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced in a press conference held on 17 October that F-16 fighters will be procured as compensation for the payments done for F-35 fighters. The topic has been in the public agenda for some time. President Erdoğan spoke as follows: “Of course, this matter is linked to F-35s. We have paid 1,4 billion dollars for F-35s. America has given us an offer for these payments. As such, we decided to take every step we need for the defence of our country. We are tirelessly working on keeping our fighter squadrons up to date in today’s paradigm. Thus, we are doing our best to further increase the capabilities of fighter squadrons, from procuring new F-16s to modernising existing ones… and we think dialogue is important to solve problems. Talks are continuing with our Ministry of National Defence being at the centre. After all, there have been some payments, and our colleagues are trying to return it back to us.”
