NOVA Power Solutions came to the Naval Systems Seminar with a message for attendees about the importance of power quality to shipboard electronics systems. NOVA Power Solutions is a U.S.-based company specializing in power solutions for shipboard or other harsh operating environments. The company’s Business Development Manager for the EMEA Region, Süleyman Bayramoğlu, delivered a presentation during the Seminar characterizing the most common problems with electrical power and describing the impact such problems have on the reliability and long-term health of sensitive electronic equipment. According to Bayramoğlu, 70% of electronic hardware malfunction or damage is actually caused by poor power quality.  The most common power quality problems fall into one of nine categories:

  1. Harmonic distortion
  2. Switching transients
  3. Line noise
  4. Frequency variations
  5. Power surges
  6. Power sags
  7. High voltage spikes
  8. Brownouts
  9. Power failures

These power anomalies can cause electronic systems to stop performing properly in the short-term and can cause them serious damage in the longer term. To ensure that delicate electronics are protected and can function reliably, NOVA Power Solutions recommends a power solution custom-tailored to the needs of a given environment, often taking the form of an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). UPSs are widely available “off the shelf” as ready-to-use products and are mostly used during power failures to provide backup power to electronic systems for a certain period of time, drawing upon backup power from batteries. Such basic types of UPS devices, which are referred to as Standby or Line Interactive UPSs, provide backup power and can prevent certain anomalies. However, when it comes to protecting sensitive electronic equipment in shipboard or other harsh environments, experts recommend more advanced UPS systems that work 100% of the time to eliminate power quality anomalies, ensuring a reliable supply of clean power to critical electronic systems. NOVA Power Solutions develops custom-tailored power solutions designed to deliver 100% protection, ensuring a continuous supply of clean power for delicate electronics under even the harshest of environmental conditions.
