STM ThinkTech Discusses the Future of Autonomous Systems

The 19th edition of the STM ThinkTech focus meetings was held on 23 June with the title “Autonomous Systems as Force Multipliers”.

Gökhan Uçar, Presidency of Defence Industries (SSB) Head of Unmanned and Smart Systems, Ahmet Raci Yalçın, SSB Head of Land Vehicles Department, Bülent Soydal, Deputy General Manager of STM, Oğuzhan Pehlivanlı, Production Manager of ARES Shipyard, Serkan Balbay, Director of Vehicle Electronics and Weapons Systems at FNSS, Prof. Dr. Kemal Leblebicioğlu, Faculty Member of METU Electrical Electronics Engineering, Harun Solmaz, Director of Business Development at Meteksan Defence , Uğur Türk, R&D Executive of Marine Projects Directorate at STM, Mehmet Arif Alcar, Manager of Submarine Design at STM, and Nevzat Polat, Manager of System Engineering at Turkish Aerospace, shared their opinions in the meeting moderated by Lieutenant General (Ret.) Alpaslan Erdoğan, Coordinator of STM ThinkTech.

Topics such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), swarm technology and cyber security and electronic warfare in unmanned systems were discussed. The points highlighted at the meeting were as follows:

  • The active use of autonomous systems has been gradually increasing.
  • UAVs are indispensable for the next generation of wars.
  • Smart UAVs with swarm intelligence will be used effectively on the battlefield in the short and medium term.
  • Capabilities derived from swarm UAV technology will also be transferred to UGVs and USVs in the upcoming period, and these platforms will be able to gain the ability to fight in unity or groups.
