TTAF Defence Unveils its Tactical Fiber Optic Communication Solutions

In addition to its design and production capabilities in cable harness and electromechanical boxes, TTAF Defence also displayed at its stand in IDEF’19 the Tactical Fiber-Optic Communication solutions of OPTOKON, with whom it has concluded a strategic representation agreement. TTAF Defence and OPTOKON signed an agreement for the establishment of a company to carry out the joint production of these products in Turkey on the second day of the event.

Following the completion of the first phase covered by the agreement, in which the necessary products will be procured directly from OPTOKON, TTAF Defence will start working with its domestic solution partners to gradually indigenise these products in Turkey. By the end of the second year, the rate of indigenousness will reach 30 percent, rising to 60 percent after the second year. Through this partnership, which includes the transfer of technology from OPTOKON, TTAF Defence will gain the ability to design fibre optic communication devices, allowing it to take part in the development of more advanced products to be produced by OPTOKON in a designer role.

By launching the manufacture of expanded beam-type fibre optic connectors in Turkey, TTAF Defence will join the international ranks of only four manufacturers that are currently able to manufacture connectors of these types.

Some of the sample products produced to date are currently undergoing testing by various domestic prime contractors.

New Export Opportunities

Through this partnership, TTAF Defence will be in a position to export its new products to third countries. Emphasising the rise in interest in fibre optic communication solutions in the Turkish defence and aerospace sector, Ergün İşgör, General Manager of TTAF Defence, commented on the advantages of their partnership: “OPTOKON is one of the best known companies in the field of tactical fibre optic communications, and they have very broad commercial networks in this field. With its well-developed production infrastructure, TTAF Defence has the ability to carry out high quality serial production at a relatively low cost. Through our new joint venture company, TTAF Defence will have the opportunity to open up to new export markets, while OPTOKON will enhance its capacity in this field.”

Explaining why OPTOKON had chosen TTAF Defence as its partner in the Turkish market, İşgör said: “TTAF Defence is a company that manufactures for land, sea and air platforms, and produces components for land vehicles to the same standards that it applies in aviation projects. The many successful projects in which we have been involved in the past, the new tasks we have undertaken, and the number and type of vehicles on which our products are used are all indicators of this.”

TTAF Defence Ensures Land Vehicle Communications through Fibre Optics

OPTOKON’s fibre optic communication devices ensure the communication between the radios, cameras and other systems inside land vehicles is maintained. Although there are a number of similar solutions available on the market, these products run smoothly only with certain radios. OPTOKON products require no integration process and have an almost universal interface, being able to work in compliance with almost all radios and similar devices, putting them ahead of their competitors. The fibre optic connections between these devices are assured through the use of fibre optic cables and connectors.

Thanks to their high data transmission rates, fibre optic technologies have started to be used in the ground control units of UAVs, and are of particular benefit in allowing the communication of UAV ground control units with each other.
